SEND Newsflash – extension of temporary changes to the law for Children and young people with EHCPs

The DfE announced on Friday 29th May that they intended to extend the temporary change in the law for EHCPs until 30th June.

The DfE newsflash said:
The Secretary of State has issued a notice to extend the temporary changes to the law on what provision has to be made currently for those with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans. The temporary changes to the law have been in force since 1 May and are now extended to 30 June. Once the notice expires, the Secretary of State can issue a further notice for a period of up to a month if it would be appropriate and proportionate to do so in the context of coronavirus. We will keep this under close review. We have also taken the opportunity to publish an updated version of Changes to the law on education, health and care needs assessments and plans due to coronavirus.

Preparing for Adulthood

The National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) have just published some new resources and podcasts as part of the Preparing for Adulthood programme, to support LA’s and families with planning during these challenging times, and beyond COVID-19. They can all be found on the PfA website here. They are free to download and use and they will be offering some training to support them in due course.

Toolkit for SEND Disagreement Resolution

The SEND Delivery Support team have published some new resources on the disagreement resolution online toolkit. These resources are:

1. SEND Disagreement Resolution factsheets (x3)

The fact sheets cover i) routes to disagreement resolution, ii) mediation and iii) SEND disagreement resolution services. They are aimed at frontline professionals who work with parent carers, young people and children within disagreement resolution processes i.e. local authority SEND teams, SENCO’s or DMO/DCOs. The 3 factsheets are now available to download on the online toolkit here under section 24.

2. Q&A Webinar:

We have also uploaded a Q&A webinar where André Imich answers common questions asked by local authorities (SEND and social care) and health care workers in regard to the SEND single route of redress national trial. This can be found under section 25 of the toolkit.

3. COVID-19 factsheet:

Lastly, we have compiled a list of the latest information and government guidance on COVID-19 in relation to SEND Disagreement Resolution and created a COVID-19 factsheet which will be updated as new guidance becomes available. This can be found at the top of the toolkit page under section B.
